How to Make the Most of Your Senior Years

What does it take to get into university? What can you do to ensure your acceptance into the program of your choice? It takes a lot more than just getting good grades in school. Not everyone will be accepted into a university program that is the best of the best. This article will help you understand how you can set yourself apart from the rest of the student body and vault toward your thriving future career.

Your grade 11 and 12 years are some of the most important years of your life. In these years, you decide what university and program you want to go into that will direct you in your desired career path. Making this decision is easy compared to making a plan for your post-secondary education and carrying it out. You have to work hard, get good grades, and prove that you deserve to get into this program above anyone else. This is the hard part. You need to have assets that will set you apart from others competing against you for the same program. Even if you are in grade 10 or 11 and don’t know what you want to do for a career, it is important for you to start gathering assets earlier rather than later. I will focus on university applications and advise ways to catch the attention of admissions officers.

Getting accepted into university is a big deal

(though the red stamp is a little dramatic!)

Participate in a variety of extracurricular activities. Admissions officers like well-rounded candidates that participate in activities even if unrelated to the program field they are applying to. Team sports are essential. They show that you are able to work well with others and balance personal life with schoolwork while attaining good grades. If you don’t already play a sport, you can try out for a school sports team. Some sport seasons at the Ridge have started, but some teams will be starting sometime later this year including swimming, curling, baseball and soccer. If you are not experienced with playing team sports, or are not very good at them, you can join the school’s track & field team, which is a walk-on team that starts up at the end of the school year, giving you plenty of time to practice. If you are interested, more information on upcoming sports at the Ridge is available on the IRHS website http://www.irhs.ca/.

Join some school clubs. Admissions officers admire students who are involved in their school community. There are a variety of clubs you can join at the Ridge that look very good on university applications, such as Model United Nations, Math contest club, Ridge Report, World Issues, and many others. There are also some more competitive clubs that look even better such as Interact and Student Council. Most clubs at the Ridge meet only once a week at lunchtime, so you don't have to worry about club commitment demanding a lot of your time.

Attain lots of volunteer hours at a variety of reputable organizations whose goals are different and exceed those of organizations students usually volunteer at. Doing this will show that you want to do more than the bare minimum of 40 hours and that you volunteered your time for the sake of a good cause that you felt passionate about. One of the better organizations you can volunteer at in Oakville is Oakville Junior CIVITAN. This organization is made up of high school students that meet once a week to plan fundraisers for local charities. Volunteering at Oakville Junior CIVITAN is an amazing and rewarding experience that is great to have on University applications.

Waiting for your university application results is stressful. Having the items discussed in this article in your university applications will ensure that you are set apart from the crowd and could mean the difference between getting into the program you want and having to settle with your second choice. Make the most of the years you have left in high school and focus on the prospect of getting the best education you can, which will ensure that you have a career in a field you enjoy where you can make the most out of your life.
